A sleepy start

Day 0
8-8-08
Gurgaon

At last the D-day arrived and everyone was busy in office. We had to finish all work by 2 PM so that we could start early. Shoyeb had talked to Vishal and gave us a great news that it is not going to be a Tata Sumo or Qualis but a Chevrolet Tavera with a luggage carrier on top! Thank god! We'll be having a comfortable journey!

Due to some last minute meetings and reports we were delayed and it was round 4:30 when we finally started. We were again delayed by the weekend traffic inside and in the outskirts of Delhi. Anyways we all were thrilled about the 9 days that lay ahead.

As soon as we started our trip, we got introduced with our driver, Sanjay. He was also our age and was a cheerful person. Once again I thanked god for not giving us another Bittu. We shared our bitter experiences with Bittu during Tawang trip. We stopped twice for having snacks and dinner and continued our trip. We knew it was hard driving to Manali in the night, so we told Sanjay to stop whenever he needed a break. But he said he was fine and continued driving. Having nothing else to do, I fell asleep after some time.

When I woke up it was 2 AM Gokul was signaling Shoyeb to keep an eye on Sanjay. We could see he was very tired and Shoyeb suggested he would drive for while. Still Sanjay insisted he was fine and carried on.

We were passing through Sundernagar area when Sanjay stopped the car and said he was feeling uneasy. He said it could be acidity or something and took a tablet from the medical kit. Once again Shoyeb suggested he would drive if Sanjay is not feeling well. But he said "no problem... i am fine." In the mean while I had taken a small nap and suggested Shoyeb to come back and sleep for some time which he readily agreed.

So I sat in the front seat giving company to Sanjay and listening to music. Around 3 AM, I clearly saw Sanjay sleeping on the wheel. Once or twice he lost the control and then suddenly sat up, looked around and continued.

We were traveling through hilly terrain and I said.. "Ok Sanjay... pull aside, take rest for some time. Even I feel sleepy now and I know it might affect ur concentration too..". At last he agreed and stopped the car. He admitted that he is also very tired and needs a break. "Its very hard to control your sleep from 3 to 4 AM."

Anyways since Shoyeb and Gokul were both sleeping now, we were stuck in the middle of nowhere! On top of that it started raining heavily! I don't know when I fell asleep, but when I woke up it was 5:30 and soon one by one all of us woke up except Sanjay. We waited till 6 and then we woke him up.

Earlier...
