Back to Guwahati.

Day 8
March 22 2008
Shillong - Guwahati

This was our last day in Shillong. We had to visit the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian and then leave to Guwahati. I was happy to go to church because I had skipped mass on Good Friday. Rajvinder came as promised and we checked out our rooms and went to the church. I couldn’t attend the mass. However I was able to join the prayer for sometime and felt good. Rajvinder tried to arrange some taxi for us. But no one was ready at that time. Then he called one of his friends who agreed to take us to Guwahati.

We had convinced him to stop for 10 minutes in Bara Paani Lake to take a few photos. He said OK. After stopping in the lake and brunch we reached Guwahati around 1:00 PM. We checked in hotel opposite to the Taxi stand. It was a nice hotel and also budget one. So we were more than happy to check in there. More over it would be easy for us to get to the airport the next day!

After taking rest for some time we decided to visit Kamakhya Mandir, Umananda Temple. On enquiring in the reception we came to know that we had to go to Umananda Ghat, which was close by. From there we will get boat which will take us to the Umananda Temple which is on an island on the Brahmaputra River. Also from the same place we would get bus to Kamakhya Mandir. But there is a Problem.

Today is Holi and we were afraid to go out. Anyone can pour color water over you and you dont have any other option. Anyways at last we decided to take our chances. We walked all the way to the Umananda Ghat. On the way we saw the roads almost deserted other than for a few youngsters drunk or otherwise on bikes and on road enjoying the Holi. Some of them even advanced towards us.. We pleaded that we were going to the temple and walked away quickly. We'd have played Holi if we were ready for it.. But not today and and certainly not here...

From the ghat we got on boat (who charged 20/- per head iso, 5/- since it was holiday day and there was no other option for us) and reached the Umananda Mandir. Everyone went inside the temple and prayed and came back. We sat there for some time and then returned.

From the ghat we got on a bus to Kamakhya Mandir. It dropped us in the foothills of the Kamakhya Mandir. From there we got a bus to the top of the hill. Everyone went into the temple. I was so tired and exhausted so I sat outside looking after their foot wears!!!

By the time they came out the last bus had gone down and we had to join with another tourists and we took an auto. From the foothill we again got a bus and reached our hotel. We had dinner in the same hotel and went to sleep early.
